New School District!!
On July 1st the first new school district in Utah in 100 years was created. It was a break off from Jordan School District. It is called Canyons. Mont was elected to the school board a year ago so we were involved in a series of events to celebrate. The first event was held at 9am in the town of Alta at the ski resort up Little Cottonwood Canyon. It was very beautiful!! The sun was shining which we will consider a good omen for the new district. Alta is the town at the furthest east end of the new district. Each of the schools in the new district had a representative from their school come and place items which had significance to the new district in a time capsule.. The theme was "I Have A Dream. . ." It was a great morning. It is very exciting to think about being involved in this historical event. We have made many new friends through the process and we saw so many people that we have known for a long time .
Several hours later we regrouped at Hillcrest High School. Mont spoke along with the Mayor of Midvale. The new logo was placed on the window of the school, and new floor mats will now greet those who come to the school. All the other 44 schools in the district will eventually receive the same treatment. This meeting at Hillcrest was the first and the one that received media recognition. Mont had the honor because he is a graduate of Hillcrest High School along with five of our children.
Everyone, students, teachers, parents etc. then met and rode school buses through the new district. All of the cities that encompass the new district came out along the streets, on the overpasses, in front of business, on top of buildings and cars with signs cheering and shouting CONGRATULATIONS!! It was exciting.
On the 4th of July we also had the opportunity to be a part of the Sandy City parade. Students, parents and employees rode in the bus. The School Board and new Superintendent walked alongside the bus. It has been a busy few days, but exciting.
